Dr. Wilma J. Newberry

Wilma Jean Newberry, a longtime Spanish professor at UB, was a faculty member from 1964 to 1997. She died in 2015 in Buffalo at 88 years old.

A native of Covington, Kentucky, Newberry received a bachelor’s degree from Case Western Reserve University and a doctorate degree from the University of Washington.

Jean authored the book “The Pirandellian Mode in Spanish Literature from Cervantes to Sastre” (SUNY Press, 1973), as well as numerous articles on modern Spanish theater and narrative in such noted academic journals as Hispania, PMLA and Symposium, among others.

She established this fund in 2015 for the Department of Modern Languages and Literature to provide financial support for undergraduate students majoring in Spanish to study in Spain.
