SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Irving H. Shames

SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Irving Shames taught two generations of UB engineering undergraduates in the field of mechanics. In 1978, he received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and in 1980 he was named a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. Among his many other honors, it is noteworthy that Shames was named professor of the year by the New York chapter Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, in 1964 and again in 1989, having maintained the same excellence in his classroom for the 25 years between. Shames was the author of several textbooks that together sold more than half a million copies.
