Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), American Rescue Plan - International

This application is for International, undocumented and DACA students. If you are a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen, please complete the HEERF application for domestic students.

Students who are or were enrolled at the University at Buffalo during the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for an emergency grant, regardless of citizenship status or Title IV financial aid eligibility. Priority is given to students with exceptional need. However, all applications will be considered.

A 2021-22 FAFSA is required for all domestic students. Domestic students may submit an application to document exceptional need in addition to the FAFSA. International, DACA and undocumented students should submit the HEERF Application for International Students which will require additional financial information in lieu of the FAFSA.

HEERF grant funding may assist with any expense related to the cost of attendance (tuition, fees, books and supplies, housing and transportation) as well as emergency costs that arise due to the coronavirus (health care, dependent care, etc.) For supporting documentation, only one file can be submitted with this question- please make sure all documents are saved in one file before uploading and submitting your application. All documents should be in your name and include the contact information for where the payment was owed, the items that were purchased and the exact amount paid. Without this information, you application will be denied for insufficient documentation.

If you are requesting assistance with housing or rent, provide a copy of your current, signed lease or housing contract. If you are requesting assistance with a bill (medical, utility, repair service, etc.), provide an invoice or monthly statement. If you are requesting assistance with technology or course materials, provide a receipt of purchase or price quote. All documents should be in your name.

NOTE: The General Application must be submitted prior to completing the HEERF application.

The deadline for the HEERF III application is December 10, 2021. All applications will be reviewed by committee. Applicants will be notified of the decision via email. All decisions are final.

  1. Determining Financial Need
    • In order to determine exceptional financial need, we will need to compare the documentation that you originally submitted to UB for the issuance of your I20 or DS-2019 and your current financial documentation. Please upload both the original and the current financial documentation.
    • Please explain the change in your financial situation resulting from the Coronavirus pandemic, and how that change relates to the expenses for which you are requesting funds.
  2. Provide a brief and specific description detailing why you are requesting Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) and how COVID-19 has led to unexpected expenses requiring emergency funds.
  3. Check all of the appropriate unexpected expenses you require emergency funding for.
  4. Provide an amount of how much you are requesting in emergency funding for the eligible expenses you selected in the above list.
  5. If the total amount you are requesting is for multiple expenses, please itemize the cost of each expense.
